Audio Fundamentals (WEEK 1)

(1) Reflection and Learning

The two sound design video summaries taught me sound’s vital role in film, gaming, and media, enhancing storytelling through emotion and atmosphere. Sound design involves selecting atmospheric sounds, effects, and Foley to complement visuals, with the “less is more” principle ensuring impactful delivery. I learned techniques like layering and time stretching, creating unique effects, such as using time stretching and rustling for a fast creature sound. Applicable across multimedia, sound design is key for immersion. I aim to apply these skills to future projects for greater impact.

(2) Exercise 1

In this exercise, our teacher gave us five audio files—one is the reference EQ effect, and the other four have different frequency balances. We need to tweak their equalizers (EQ) to make their sound as close as possible to the reference audio.

Equalizer 1

EQ - 1

Equalizer 2

EQ - 2

Equalizer 3

EQ - 3

Equalizer 4

EQ - 4
This task taught me how to spot frequency differences, use EQ tools precisely, match the target sound, analyze issues, and balance the tone. It also honed my musical taste and attention to detail, feeling like real mixing work, and helped me build a solid foundation for audio production!
