Sonic Design Project 2: Auditory Story ‘Cassina’ - Original Script

Auditory Storytelling

Refined Concept

To complete the “Project 2: Auditory Storytelling” task, I crafted an original fairy tale script with a deliberately dark and melancholic tone, aiming to subvert the conventional, monotonous narrative style of traditional fairy tales. I believe fairy tales should not be confined to a single tone, and a darker approach can evoke deeper emotional resonance. For the voice recording, I initially tried narrating the story myself but found it lacked immersion. To address this, I used LOVO AI’s voice conversion tool to generate a weathered, elderly voice, resembling a storyteller recounting an ancient legend, which significantly enhanced the narrative’s depth and immersion.     In the visual creation phase, I leveraged Midjourney’s powerful text-to-image functionality, feeding it mood board images to generate visuals that aligned with the script’s dark and mysterious atmosphere, ensuring the aesthetic matched my creative vision.

For the music, which played a critical role in setting the tone, I selected background tracks from FromSoftware’s Dark Souls series, known for their legendary and somber qualities. These tracks featured grand orchestral arrangements during emotional climaxes to heighten intensity and low, haunting chants during moments of struggle to underscore loneliness, seamlessly complementing the storyline and deepening the listener’s emotional experience.

For sound design, I employed a meticulous yet conventional approach, incorporating environmental sound effects to enhance immersion. For instance, howling winds accompanied descriptions of blizzards, crunching footsteps marked snowy treks, and clashing swords punctuated key battle scenes. These effects were carefully chosen to serve the narrative, amplifying the story’s realism and atmosphere. Drawing from classroom techniques, I applied sound EQ, fade-ins/outs, panning adjustments, and effects processing to enrich the auditory experience.

Ultimately, the final film combined the script, voiceover, visuals,
music, and sound effects into a cohesive, immersive auditory storytelling experience with a powerful and evocative atmosphere.
